Moving in with Roommates: What I Wish I Knew

Here are some things I’ve learned while I stayed with 3 other co-workers as housemates. One thing for sure is that this will NOT be easy. Living with people for the first time will bring out the worst in them. To avoid the horrors of living with roommates for the first time, I’ve listed down below some important things for guidance. These are the things I wish I knew before moving in with roommates.

  1. Being close friends doesn’t automatically mean you are compatible as roommates. People tend to show their true selves once they are in a comfortable environment.
  2. You need to have a formal sitdown with your new housemates regarding the division of mandatory house expenses. It needs to be as detailed as possible. Include here how to pay, when to pay, how to divide electricity bills, who will order drinking water, etc.
  3. “Usapang pera to, walang magkakaibigan”. There is no one correct way how to divide expenses. Just make sure you all discuss this properly, and thoroughly and agree on how you will do it.
  4. Nominate and decide who will be the point person for the household. This person will be the contract signatory (if required), checking account owner (if required), and in charge of making sure all expenses are paid on time. This will depend on the payment arrangement with the landlord.
  5. Decide on the Bathroom schedule! Especially if you’re all working professionals.
  6. Set ground rules to keep the peace. This may include cleaning assignments, visitors, sharing of groceries, etc.
